The Crush is a 1993 American thriller film written and directed by Alan Shapiro. It stars Cary Elwes and Alicia Silverstone in her feature film debut. It was filmed on location in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Plot summary

Nick Eliot (Elwes), a journalist, moves into a new neighborhood where the young Adrian Forrester (Silverstone) lives. She is fourteen years old, half his age. She becomes very interested in him, but he rejects her advances, especially since she is so young. Her parents don’t realize she is an emotionally unstable sociopath, even after she sets out to destroy his life — and eventually him.

Plot synopsis

Arriving in a new city, writer Nick Eliot (Cary Elwes) secures a job at Pique magazine and lodgings in a guest house belonging to Cliff and Liv Forrester (Kurtwood Smith and Gwynyth Walsh). The handsome Nick soon makes the acquaintance of the Forrester’s 14-year-old daughter Adrian (Alicia Silverstone), a precocious gifted girl who develops an intense attraction to him. She secretly helps Nick by sneaking into his room and rewriting one of his Pique stories, which subsequently wins a rave from his editor/boss Michael (Matthew Walker). At a party thrown by the Forresters, Nick agrees to accompany the lonely girl on a nightly drive to a romantic spot, where she kisses him.

This intensifies Adrian’s crush on Nick, but he quickly wises up and attempts to put her off, having begun a budding romance with co-worker Amy (Jennifer Rubin). Adrian continues to boldly pursue him, even going so far as to undress in his view. Nick, however, continues to rebuff her advances, and Adrian’s actions become destructive–she defaces a car he’s restored and erases his computer discs–yet he’s unable to convince Cliff and Liv of what’s going on. Cheyenne (Amber Benson), a friend of Adrian who has warned Nick about her, meets with an “accident” at the riding school they attend together. Then, after Adrian spies on Amy in bed with Nick, the girl locks Amy in her darkroom and empties a wasps’ nest into the vents.

Obama’s Thoughts on ‘Tragic’ Michael Jackson

Obama’s Thoughts on ‘Tragic’ Michael Jackson

Even though it’s well known that President Obama is an avid music fan (he lists Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, and The Fugees as some of his favorite artists on his official Facebook page), no one asked his personal thoughts on the passing of pop icon Michael Jackson during Friday’s press conference.

According to Newsweek, in a separate briefing, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs stated:

“I talked to [Obama] about it this morning. Look, he said to me that obviously Michael Jackson was a spectacular performer and a music icon. I think everybody remembers hearing his songs, watching him moonwalk on television during Motown’s 25th anniversary. But the president also said, look, he had aspects of his life that were sad and tragic. And his condolences went out to the Jackson family and to the fans that mourned his loss.”

With the situation in Iran getting murkier, the president has been having a busy week, and international affairs should be his number one priority. But is an indirect comment from Obama good enough? Or should the president issue an official statement about Michael Jackson’s death?

CBS News points out that President Jimmy Carter faced a similar situation in 1977 after Elvis Presley died. “The president eventually issued a carefully written statement declaring that Presley was ‘unique and irreplaceable’ and his music ‘permanently changed the face of American popular culture.'”

This time it should be more personal, according to an article on ETalkingHead. “I’m willing to bet that when the president saw that first Jackson Five album cover decades ago, it helped him to feel a sense of pride and allegiance to young black boys with ‘fros’ in every corner of America.” And The Atlantic agrees, citing Jackson‘s role in “bringing people together, especially in the 80s, when race relations seemed more strained.”

So should the president take a minute from his pressing agenda and issue a statement on the death of Michael Jackson and his cultural influence? Or maybe it’s up to Michelle Obama to address the American public?
