Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, released on 16 July 2005, is the sixth of seven novels from British author J. K. Rowling’s popular Harry Potter series. Set during Harry Potter’s sixth year at Hogwarts, the novel explores Lord Voldemort’s past, and Harry’s preparations for the final battle amidst emerging romantic relationships and the emotional confusions and conflict resolutions characteristic of mid-adolescence.

As Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters commit crimes in both the magical and Muggle worlds, Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge is replaced by Rufus Scrimgeour. Professor Snape, appearing to have rejoined the Death Eaters and Lord Voldemort, is visited by Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. A terrified Narcissa tells Snape that her son, Draco, has received orders from Lord Voldemort, and asks Snape to make an Unbreakable Vow to protect her son and complete the task for him should he fail.

Harry Potter accompanies Albus Dumbledore on a trip to persuade retired Hogwarts professor Horace Slughorn to return to teaching. Harry notices one of Dumbledore’s hands is withered and burnt black, and he is wearing a ring with a distinctively-marked stone. Harry spends the remaining holiday at The Burrow with the Weasleys and Hermione, where they receive their O.W.L. results. Harry and Ron must take N.E.W.T. level Potions to become Aurors, but their O.W.L.s in the subject are too low to enrol in Snape’s Potions class.

At Hogwarts, Snape is named the new Defence Against the Dark Arts instructor, with Slughorn becoming the Potions teacher. Slughorn’s requirements are lower than Snape’s, so Harry and Ron are able to enrol in his class, but do not have textbooks. Slughorn loans them copies; Harry’s book has notes and corrections that yield better results than the textbook’s instructions, winning him a vial of Felix Felicis, a potion that infuses luck, on his first day in class. His book is inscribed as having previously belonged to the “Half-Blood Prince”.

Ron’s brother, Bill Weasley, is engaged to Fleur Delacour, of whom his mother disapproves. Auror Nymphadora Tonks makes comments suggesting she may harbour feelings for her now-slain cousin Sirius Black. However, it is eventually revealed that she has fallen for Remus Lupin, and, despite his protests that he is unworthy of her, they marry over the summer.

Ron and Ginny join the Gryffindor Quidditch team, which Harry now captains, as Keeper and Chaser respectively. This puts Harry in frequent contact with Ginny, who for a long time harbored an attraction to him. Now, however, she is dating Dean Thomas— unexpectedly making Harry jealous. This is exacerbated when Dean also gains membership on the team, replacing original member Katie Bell who is almost killed while attempting to deliver a cursed necklace under the influence of the Imperius Curse. Ron is displeased with his younger sister dating anybody, forcing Harry to ignore his attraction. After an argument with Ginny in which Ron’s dating inexperience is made clear, Ron takes up with Lavender Brown, creating a divide between him and Hermione. This rift is only mended when he accidentally consumes a love potion attracting him to Romilda Vane, and then poisoned mead which almost kills him.

The film based on the sixth book was originally scheduled to be released on 21 November 2008, but was pushed back to 15 July 2009.The screenplay was written by Steve Kloves, and David Yates directed the film. The film is 153 minutes long, making it the third longest Harry Potter film of the series.

Along with the rest of the books in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was translated into 67 languages.A translation into Scots Gaelic is planned to be released by Bloomsbury in July 2009.

LONDON (Reuters) – Romantic comedy meets the wizarding world in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”, the sixth instalment in the hit movie franchise in which hormones, as well as hexes, are on the loose at Hogwarts school.

And with filming on the final two pictures due to wrap up in 2010, the young actors who spent much of their teen years on set and coping with the superstardom their success has brought are finally looking ahead to life after Potter.

“It was nice to be back and to know that this film is, to me, more of a romantic comedy than ever before and that we would have a chance to focus more on that side of things,” said Emma Watson, who plays the feisty bookworm Hermione in the films.

“Sometimes I have to bring myself back with Hermione, because she is so innocent and so naive and she really is very vulnerable in this film,” the 19-year-old actress told reporters on Monday at a press conference to publicise the movie.

“She really does get her heart broken by Ron and Lavender and that whole situation.”

Director David Yates, who also made the fifth movie “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”, added: “Our cast are just getting that little bit older now and the hormones are starting to fly and for me it marks a real transition point between our cast as children and our cast as adults.”

In Half-Blood Prince, out in theatres on July 15, Hogwarts is increasingly vulnerable to attack from Lord Voldemort, wizard Potter’s nemesis.

Professor Slughorn, played by Jim Broadbent, joins the cast, and Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore places more and more trust in his star pupil Potter, determined to prepare him for his inevitable showdown with Voldemort.

Meanwhile, love blossoms, with Harry drawn to Ginny and Ron attracting the attention of Lavender Brown as a heartbroken Hermione looks on jealously.

The first reviews of the movie have been positive.

Variety magazine described it as “dazzlingly well made and perhaps deliberately less fanciful than the previous entries” while The Hollywood Reporter said “a jerky start of exposition and backstory gives way to vigorous storytelling.”

The films, the first five of which have earned an impressive $4.5 billion at the box office, are based on British author J.K. Rowling’s seven-book Harry Potter series, which has sold an estimated 400 million copies worldwide.

There will be eight films in all, with the final volume, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, divided into two.

“We’re working at the moment on Deathly Hallows, and I think we’re all aware that this great juggernaut is reaching the end of its journey in a way,” said Yates, who is also directing Deathly Hallows Parts One and Two.

“We finish shooting next spring and everybody comes to work … with that knowledge in the back of their mind.”

According to Hollywood studio Warner Bros., the seventh film is scheduled to hit cinemas in November, 2010 and the eighth in the summer of 2011.

“I’d like to continue acting, really, if I can,” said Rupert Grint, who plays Ron.

“It’s kind of all coming to an end now and I suppose you’ve got to start thinking about that kind of thing.”

Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry and has starred on the Broadway stage, also plans to go on acting.

“Hopefully just keep acting is the plan. I just want to keep going for as long as I can and I’ve had a fantastic time with Potter. I will be very sad to leave it.”

Watson is going to university in the United States.

“I’m very excited and looking forward to a bit of normality for a while, it would be nice,” she said. “But that by no means means that by going to university I’m never going to act again.”

‘Prince’ charming: Raging hormones infiltrate Hogwarts in delicious ‘Half-Blood’

‘Prince’ charming: Raging hormones infiltrate Hogwarts in delicious ‘Half-Blood’

It’s Harry, Hermione and Ron’s sixth year at Hogwarts, and one of the Dark Arts practiced this quarter is “snogging.”

In “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” the delayed, sixth installment in the series based on J.K. Rowling’s books – the films began to appear in 2001 – the student body has a fever up and the words “I-put-a-spell-on-you” have all new meaning.

The new face this time out belongs to Dickensian-named Professor Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent), whose speciality is potions (love, for example), and who has a well-kept secret.

Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) is in grave danger of not being as funny as his friends … and in just plain grave danger. Lavishly bearded Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) resembles a cross between Dickens’ Fagin and his Ghost of Christmas Past more than ever.

Ron (the talented Rupert Grint) is busy osculating colorful Lavender Brown (Jessie Cave). Hermione (a lovely, comic turn by Emma Watson) is desolate, because of Ron’s dalliance and because Harry is upstaging her in potions class with the help of an amended textbook once owned by the eponymous Prince.

Who is the Half-Blood Prince? Will Malfoy (Tom Felton) succeed in assassinating a Hogwarts VIP? Will this “Harry Potter” be better than “The Prisoner of Azkaban?” (No.)

The semi-involving plot also features attacks by Death Eaters, a vanishing cabinet, He Who Must Not Be Named, girls’ skin, tight sweaters, a dull romance between Harry and Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) and (drat) quidditch.

In a wonderfully eerie and evocative flashback, a much younger Dumbledore goes to an orphanage to meet a dangerous resident, a grim-faced boy named Tom Riddle, future Lord Voldemort, who is telekinetic and can speak with snakes.

Directed by David Yates (“Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”), the film is beautifully made, if not exactly inspired. Perhaps in keeping with this, its favorite meal is dessert, and if the powered broomsticks seem more phallic than ever, Hogwarts remains an enchanting place to visit.

Like J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” series and the films they spawned, which are evoked in an attack by an army of Gollum-like creatures here, the “Harry Potter” books and films are steeped in a wondrous mythology of their own.

In the cast, Alan Rickman (also known as Severus Snape) remains the series’ biggest asset, a mesmerizing actor who can do more with a pause than others can do with a page of dialogue.

Helena Bonham Carter returns as wicked witch Bellatrix Lestrange. The marvelous Maggie Smith has too little screen time, ditto for Julie Walters and Robbie Coltrane. Evanna Lynch is wonderfully moonstruck as Luna Lovegood, even if her name still sounds more Ian Fleming than Dickens. One of the things I love most about “Harry Potter” films is that they give some of the greatest British actors alive a well-deserved payday.
