A Lohan comeback or just more ‘Pains’?

A Lohan comeback or just more ‘Pains’?

Could Lindsay Lohan be just one comedy shy of a comeback?

There was a time not too long ago the 23-year-old was raking in box office and positive praise for her performances in movies such as “Freaky Friday” and the Tina Fey-penned “Mean Girls.”

But in recent years, as Lohan’s often out-of-control personal life has been tabloid fodder, her acting career has gone by the wayside. A guest run on “Ugly Betty” was cut short, and recent films have turned out to be little-seen duds, including the romantic comedy “Just My Luck” opposite a then-unknown Chris Pine, the ho-hum family drama “Georgia Rule,” and the thriller “I Know Who Killed Me,” which cleaned up at the Razzie Awards and made just $7.4 million at the domestic box office.

Lohan’s latest, “Labor Pains,” about a woman who fakes a pregnancy to avoid being fired, was supposed to put her comedic gifts back in the spotlight. Whether that will happen is now up to a television audience — the movie won’t be playing in theaters. Lohan is not doing press for the film and declined a request for an interview through her representatives.

“Labor Pains” will premiere Sunday on ABC Family, a network owned by Disney, which launched some of Lohan’s biggest hits: “The Parent Trap,” “Freaky Friday” and later “Herbie: Fully Loaded.” First Look will release “Labor Pains” on DVD Aug. 4.

“Lindsay’s been a great draw for us, so we felt there was a good opportunity,” said Tom Zappala, ABC Family senior vice president of program acquisitions. In spite of her flagging reputation, Zappala bought premiere rights to the film based on the Lohan romantic comedy premise alone, script unseen. The network continues to draw above-average ratings from airings of her other films, such as “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen” and “Mean Girls.”

The script for “Labor Pains” was originally developed as a wide-release film by Warner Bros., but when that option lapsed, director and co-writer Lara Shapiro found other funding at smaller production companies.

Producer Rick Schwartz, whose other credits include “The Aviator” and “The Departed,” said a theatrical run would have been ideal, but that the low-budget film was not intended as a wide release. Its production costs “were in line with what a place like ABC Family would spend on their original TV movies,” he said — ballpark: $1 million to $2 million — adding that the film will ultimately be profitable.

Lohan came on board well after Warner Bros. dropped out. Shapiro said the actress, who reportedly made $7.5 million in 2006 for “Just My Luck,” wasn’t fazed by the idea of “low budget” and seemed genuinely interested in getting her career back on track. “We only talked about the story and character,” she said. Cheryl Hines, Chris Parnell and Janeane Garofalo signed on later.

In February, Lohan complained to Interview magazine that she wasn’t getting the same opportunities as peers like Scarlett Johansson “because people are so distracted by the mess I created in my life.”

For Shapiro, a first-time feature director, concerns about working with the paparazzi magnet took a back seat. “I took the gamble. I really wasn’t that worried. There aren’t that many girls in her age group who can do comedy well. I thought it was worth it . . . I was betting on the ‘Freaky Friday’ Lindsay Lohan.”

“Labor Pains” was shot last summer, and while the shoot was constantly flanked by photographers, Shapiro said her star remained professional. In fact, Lohan never even discussed the uninvited crowd. “I wasn’t used to it, but she was, and she’s real good at ignoring it,” Shapiro said. “If they weren’t there, she probably could focus better, but I never saw it get in her way.”

ABC Family has gotten considerable press for the project, and early reviews for the film have been mostly positive (though not in this paper), some singling out Lohan as a high point.

Schwartz e-mailed Lohan some of those reviews earlier this week. Lohan, it seems, surprised even herself. He said that she texted him back: “Wow! These are good.”

“Good or bad, she wanted the headlines to be about something other than her personal life,” Schwartz said. “It’s a vehicle that takes her back to her roots. I like to think it’s a stepping stone for her.”

Megan Denise Fox (born May 16, 1986) is an American film and television actress. Fox began her acting career in 2001 with a supporting role as Brianna Wallace in the film Holiday in the Sun. Fox then guest-starred in various television series, including What I Like About You and Two and a Half Men, and played a recurring role on Hope and Faith. In 2004, Fox relaunched her film career starring opposite Lindsay Lohan in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, but it was not until 2007 that she had her breakout role as Mikaela Banes, the love interest of Shia LaBeouf’s character in the blockbuster film Transformers, a role for which Fox was nominated and won various Teen Choice Awards. She reprised her role in the sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Fox frequently appears in men’s magazine “Hot Lists”. She was listed #18, #16, and #2 on Maxim magazine’s yearly Hot 100 list in 2007, 2008 and 2009 respectively, while FHM readers voted her the “Sexiest Woman in the World” in 2008. Fox ranked number one on Moviefone’s “The 25 Hottest Actors Under 25” in 2008.

Personal life

Fox has been involved with actor Brian Austin Green since 2004, having first met on the set of Fox’s show Hope & Faith. It was reported that the couple had ended their relationship in July 2008 and in February 2009;however, Fox and Green both confirmed on both occasions that the two are still in a relationship. On June 15, 2009 at the UK premiere of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Fox stated that she was single;  however, she was later seen with Green and the media is reporting that the two are in a relationship again.

Fox has spoken extensively of her time in education; that in middle school she was bullied and picked on and she ate lunch in the bathroom to avoid being “pelted with ketchup packets”. Fox said that the problem was not her looks, but that she had “always gotten along better with boys” and that “rubbed some people the wrong way”. Fox also said of high school that she was never popular and that “everyone hated me, and I was a total outcast, my friends were always guys, I have a very aggressive personality, and girls didn’t like me for that. I’ve had only one great girlfriend my whole life”. Fox said in the same interview that she hated school and has never been “a big believer in formal education” and that “the education I was getting seemed irrelevant. So, I was sort of checked out on that part of it”.

Fox is good friends with Jennifer Blanc, Kellan Rhude, Jennifer’s Body co-star Amanda Seyfried, Michael Biehn and Transformers co-star Shia LaBeouf.[81] She is both a fan of comic books, anime, and video games, and has said that her interest in art began at 12 years old, when she watched animated shows on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network.[80] Fox’s favorite artist is Michael Turner whose Fathom comic she describes as a longtime obsession. Fox has two dogs, including a Pomeranian named after the punk-icon Sid Vicious. Fox has openly stated that she’s taken drugs, and that it has meant she knows she doesn’t like them, adding that she knows a few people who aren’t on drugs, herself included. Fox has also openly stated that she supports the legalization of marijuana, saying that she does not consider it a drug and that she would be first in line to buy a pack of joints.

Über-hottie Megan Fox got oodles of good bad press recently when she compared her Transformers director Michael Bay to Hitler (and said sundry other crazy things). But now a few crew members have decided to teach the Jennifer’s Body star a lesson by giving her more publicity, in the form a long open letter posted on the Transformers site. It’s pure genius of the moron kind!

The crew’s A-game is name-calling. They call her “dumb as a rock” and the “queen of talking trailer trash and posing like a porn star,” not to mention “grumpy” and “thankless, classless, graceless.” And on and on and on.

The public spanking letter was ultimately yanked down by Bay (but you can read the whole thing here via PerezHilton.com). But the director went on to show the crew nerds how these things are properly done, posting on the site:

“I don’t condone the crew letter to Megan. And I don’t condone Megan’s outlandish quotes. But her crazy quips are part of her crazy charm. The fact of the matter is I still love working with her, and I know we still get along. I even expect more crazy quotes from her on Transformers 3.”

Now that’s how you transform bad publicity into something good.
